Topshop in Toronto

Big news for Toronto…Topshop is opening a shop-in-shop at Jonathan + Olivia June 19th. They’re testing the market before committing, which was the same method used with Opening Ceremony before they opened in NYC.

Jonathan + Olivia will be expanding their location for the shop-in-shop in order to accommodate Topshop’s main line collection, its designer collaboration label and eventually its footwear, makeup and menswear products.

When it comes to extraordinary fashion brands, Maison Martin Margiela stands out. A master at deconstruction (characteristic of Belgian designers), Margiela created more than a fashion brand; his aura of secrecy and invisibility created a cult brand. The brand was  hard to find (stores had no signs and were not listed); the brand had no face (Margiela disappeared from public life and models’ faces were usually covered ); the brand operated against the norms of the industry (i.e. first come first serve seated at fashion shows).

Agenda Inc. published an interesting paper briefly chronicling the brand’s identity, questioning the future of the brand and pointing out learning points the brand should have followed from cult culture in order to maintain the unique position of the brand after Margiela’s departure last fall.

Take a look at the paper here.

Acne on Dover Street

I thought gone were the days when I wanted to be dressed from head to toe in one brand…until Acne’s SS10 collection. I just want to run out of every store with my arms full of Acne clothing and shoes…can we please appreciate these shoes.

Exciting news for the brand – they will be opening a 4 storey town house on Dover Street mid-July. Directly-operated retail environments are always the best way to communicate the brand’s image, essence and provide a unique experience for consumers. For me, it is a vital part of the shopping experience and can make or break my loyalty to brands. Some brands do it better than others and I’m excited to see how Acne’s retail experience complements their great designs.

A few of my favourite Acne pieces below…

Borough Market

Borough Market is one of my favourite parts of London. An official trading ground since 1755, you can find anything from local wine to ostrich burgers to fresh mussels to homemade chutney. One of my favourites is the Ogleshield cheese stand where you can either have a grilled sandwich or have melted cheese poured on potatoes.

Borough Market is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday by London Bridge.

Interview: Madonna

Anyone who knows me knows I absolutely LOVE Madonna. I find her truly inspiring. Love her or hate her, you cannot deny her ability to push boundaries, challenge those around her, and bring together different generations and cultures with her music.

Busy as usual, her recent projects include building a school in Malawi, expanding into fashion with a deal at Macy’s and writing a film.

Gus Van Sant interviewed her for Interview Magazine. Check out their conversation here about her new film, Malawi and those that inspire her.

Major side-note –  If you ever have the chance to see her in concert – I wouldn’t miss it!

10 Corso Como

10 Corso Como is a boutique to be visited and sits among the standard of Dover Street Market. Owned by, Carla Sozzani (sister of Franca Sozzani Editor in Chief Vogue Italy), the boutique is a sanctuary of lifestyle where one can shop, eat, browse art, read books, listen to music or check into the hotel. The space occupies an entire courtyard, house and roof patio in Milan. Brands in the boutique include Raf Simons, Maison Martin Margiela, Azzedine Alaia and Manolo Blahnik. During my visit, the galleries had a Margiela exhibit which included SS’10 sunglasses and jewelry and a retrospective on jewelry designer, Kris Ruhs. From May 6th – June 8th the gallery presents the 2010 Word Press Photo Contest.
